Carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) plays a central role in supporting the transition to a low-carbon energy system. CCUS deployment reaches around 4-6GtCO2 by 2050 in Accelerated and Net Zero, compared with around 1Gt CO2 in New Momentum.
The scenarios in the Energy Outlook focus largely on emissions emanating from the production and use of energy. In that context, they include bioenergy combined with CCUS, but do not explicitly model other forms of carbon dioxide removal which operate outside of the energy sector, including natural climate solutions and direct air carbon capture with storage.
